My Story
I married Patrick Long September 9, 1989 and honeymooned in England and Wales. Unfortunately, he died of anaplastic thyroid cancer on 7/1/2003. Our son Gordon was born October 7, 1991.
After graduation I attended George Mason University and graduated in January 1976. I then spent the next 37 years working for the Federal Government. Most of my service was working in the publishing arena. I worked on instructional manuals which included planes, ships, and helicopters when employed at Navy Tactical Support Activity (NTSA). When preparing flight checklists for print, it was gratifying. In October 1998, I was transferred to the Air Force as NTSA was moving to the Naval War College in RI. I was the Air Force Federal Register Liaison Officer until December 2001. During this time, I notified Office of Primary Responsibility to update information in their CFR as the Air Force Instruction (AFI) did not match. I signed off on the AF portion of proposed/final rules and submitted to the Federal Register. These were later sent for incorporation into the Unified Agenda. In addition, I was the AF/SCITR Safety Officer for one year. I updated the previous Safety book. I sent many informative emails during the year in addition to the annual 101 Days of Summer. In December 2001 I accepted a position at the Air Force Department Publishing Office (AFDPO). After the Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell rule changed, the SECAF ordered the updated publications be placed on the AFDPO website by 8 a.m. the next morning. The Director, myself, my supervisor, and the webmaster worked until 2 a.m. to get these publications posted. They were all posted and the SECAF was happy. On another occasion, AFI 36-2903, Dress and Appearance was received on a Friday morning for a change that needed to be posted by Monday to avoid lawsuits. I noticed it appeared to have a duplication. After review by the AFI guidance POC, they agreed. Issue was resolved. The AFI was posted, and lawsuits were avoided. I retired on August 31, 2012. In the last 20 years I have advocated. for better pay and benefits for Home Health Care Aides that take care of the elderly and disabled. I have spoken at State budget hearings and a round table with Rep. Gerry Connally and now Rep. Jennifer Wexton. Since 2013, I have been to the Caribbean, Israel, Vietnam, New Zealand, and Australia. I have snorkeled in the Great Barrier Reef and also climbed Dunn’s River Falls in Jamaica. I look forward to future travels and experiences.
